二人のプロフェッショナルギタリスト、JackSpiraの工房を訪ねる

メルボルンの郊外にあるギターメーカー、ジャック・スピラの工房を
二人のプロフェッショナルギタリスト　Akiさんと、ぷう吉さんが訪ねました。
さっそくオリジナルギターをオーダー。今回はその模様をご紹介します。

ぷう吉さんは2013年12月、シドニーはオペラハウスの前でバスキング
（ストリート・ミュージシャン）をしていました。　2012年に引き続き、2回目、
クリスマス前後の3ヶ月の滞在です。オーストラリアはこの時期夏にあたります。

最初にお会いしたのは、2013年11月に開催されたサウンドメッセ大阪でのこと。
あまりにも素晴らしいギターを弾いているぷう吉さんを会場で発見し、
CDをさっそく購入、サインをもらってスナップ写真。
なんと素晴らしいギターを弾かれると思ったら頭脳も明晰！さらに
たくさん受賞していらっしゃるとのこと。ぷう吉さんのプロフィールはこちら。

私たちがメルボルンに住んで、ジャック・スピラのギターを日本に紹介
していることをお話したら、「僕、今年もシドニー行くんです」と。

「ええ～っ！じゃあぜひぜひお会いしましょう！」
ということで11月に大阪でお会いして、あっという間に12月のクリスマス前に
シドニーで再会することができました！

オペラハウスの前でとっても素敵なギターを奏でているぷう吉さん。
カップルも家族も足を止めます。
このときはサマータイムを演奏中。
リズミカルで語りかけるようなギターが、この素敵な場所をさらにいいムードに・・・。

そしてこちらはAkiさん。
今年からシドニーでバスキングしているAkiさんは、ぷう吉さんのお友達。
やはりプロフェッショナルギタリストで、5歳からクラシックギターを学び、
クラシックギターだけではなく、ジャズ、ロック、アコースティックギターと多彩、
とにかくギターとともに生きてきた生粋のギターマンです。

Akiさんは、WAVEを演奏していました。
すこし夕暮れになってきた、おしゃれなダーリンハーバーにぴったりの
しっとりとしたソロアレンジ。　道行く人も足をとめてうっとりと聴いています。

ダーリンハーバーもクリスマスのデコレーション一色です。

みんなでダーリンハーバーのそばで夕焼けビール。
シドニーは半そでのクリスマスです。

このときが12月23日。
シドニーはクリスマスムードで大変な盛り上がりでした。
ギターやら音楽やらと、いろいろとお話が盛り上がり・・・。

そして年明けて1月13日。

お二人はメルボルンにやってきました。
飛行機で移動する距離でありながら、またしてもあっという間の再会！
メルボルンの1月は真夏です。
目的はジャック・スピラに会って、ギターをみせてもらうこと。
さっそく工房に行ってみました。

ジャックの工房は、メルボルン郊外の牧場や林がたくさんある場所にあります。
なんと手作りの工房だそうです。

中に入るといろいろな道具が。

製作途中のギターのネックもありました。

こちらは、サイドの木を型にはめて固定しているところ。
たくさんの万力を使っています。

さっそくジャックがサウンドボードの木材を見せてくれました。
シトカ・スプルース、アディロン･ダック、シダー、イングルマン・スプルース
ジャーマン・スプルースなど、木材ごとに特徴を説明していきます。

木材を指ではじくと、音の質が違うことが分かります。
みんなではじいてみたり。

Akiさんはさっそくお気に入りの木を見つけました。
ムーン･スプルースのAAAです。

ムーン･スプルースとは、月齢に沿って一定の条件で伐採されたものだそうです。
AAAというのは、木目の美しさをランクで示しているもので、Aが多くなるほどよいそうです。
Akiさんが持っている板には、月の印とAAAのマークがついています。
ジャックは通常、AAAランクの木材を使用しています。

次は、サイド・バックの木材です。
ジャックは通常、オーストラリアン・ブラックウッドや、インディアン･ローズウッド、タイガーマートル
ヴィクトリアン・アッシュ、ローズ・マホガニー、ジリコテなど通常使用しています。
水をはけで塗ると、仕上がりの磨いた色に近くなります。

ひとつひとつの木材には、独特の木目の美しさがあります。
職人が作るハンドメイドギターは、そうした木目を美しく見せるよう、
ひとつひとつ細かく神経を使って作られています。
そうして、世界に一本だけのギターが完成します。

だんだん雰囲気もなごやかになってきて、
ジャックのギターのモデルの一覧を見ながら、しばし談笑。

現在製作中のギターで、ジャックのオリジナルブレイシングを紹介。
サイドの枠は、一般的な切り目をつけたライニングを使わず、
堅いマホガニーかメイプルを使用しています。
これにより高音は華やかに、低音はしっかりとした音になります。
ブレイシングも無駄をはぶき、細くけずることによって、より音が響きます。

一度ブレイシングを削っているところを見せてもらいましたが、
その迷いのない手元に驚きました。さすが30年近いキャリアですね。

こちらはアイリッシュ・ブズーキのブレイシング。
違う形のブレイシングになっています。
オーストラリアでは、アイリッシュ・ブズーキを使っているミュージシャンも
多くいるので、ジャックもときどきオーダーを受けています。

これはバックの板に中央のブレイシングを接着しているところ。
天井に細い棒を何本も突っ張って圧着します。

同じ敷地にあるクリフさんの家のリビング場所を移して、
ジャックのナイロン弦のギターを試奏するAkiさん。
試奏といっても立派な演奏。すてきなリビングがコンサートステージに！

しばらく曲を演奏したAkiさん。
「うーん　ちょっと弦高が高い気がするかな。」

「すぐ直せるから、直しましょう。」と、ジャック。

工房でさっそく弦高を調節。
いったん弦をはずし、サドルを削ります。

弦高を測る定規と鉛筆。実はこの鉛筆、真半分になってました。
細かい場所に使用するためなんでしょうね。

「うーん、だいぶ調整できたかな」

ところで、フレットも太さ、高さなどで選ぶことができます。
フレットはワイヤー状で、板に打ち込みカットします。

さて、弦高を調整したギターをもういちどリビングで試奏するAkiさん、
「弾きやすくなりました！」と、にっこり。

こちらがそのときのAkiさんの演奏です。

演奏の曲は「琉球の玉手箱」Akiさんのオリジナル曲です。
まん中の３つの弦を三線（さんしん　・・・沖縄独特の３つの弦がある弦楽器）と同じ
チューニングにして弾いているそうです。
オーストラリアにいることを忘れてしまうひとときでした。

一方ぷう吉さんは、アコースティックギターを試奏。
やはりプロギタリスト、今日はクリフさんのリビングがすてきなコンサート会場です。

さて、ひとしきり試奏がすんで、どんなギターにしようか、
シンキングタイムです。

ジャックは使い込んだオーダーノートを出して、
二人の要望をメモ。

こちらはヘッドの形のテンプレート。
チューリップ型とかいろいろとあります。

インレイもオーダー。
Akiさんは愛犬DINOとオーストラリアの白いオウム、コカトゥを

なんか無理難題じゃないですか？

でも、ジャックは　「Yeah, OK」と。

出来上がりが待ち遠しいですね。

一方ぷう吉さんのインレイは、ブタ。

フィンガーボードをブタが散歩しているかもしれません。
こちらもとっても楽しみですね。

未体験のインレイモチーフに、ジャックはどう立ち向かうのでしょうか。

乞うご期待。

そんなわけでひと段落。ギターを抱えて楽しいひととき。

そんな中、この家の持ち主、クリフさんは、おいしいラム肉を焼いています。
クリフさんはお料理がとても上手です。　笑顔がとっても素敵です。
ピアノの調律をしていて、ピアノもギターも、とても上手です。

このように、すばらしいディナーが出来上がりました！
野菜がいっぱいのいろとりどりのメニュー。

オーストラリアの夏の夜は長く、1月は夜9時すぎくらいに日没です。
ディナーのあとは、出会いを記念して集合写真。
クリフさんの奥様のアンジーさんも、愛犬たちも集合！

近くには夕方、野生のカンガルーがたくさん出てくる公園があります。
このようにすぐ近くで見ることができますが、
餌付けされているわけではないので、あまり近づくと逃げてしまいます。
夜行性なので、日没前にならないと出てきません。

おなかに赤ちゃんが入っていました。

この公園にある貯水池です。
終日いいお天気でした。

お二人はメルボルンでは2泊、滞在していたときは日中40度の猛暑でしたが
元気にシドニーに帰りました。　翌2月にはシドニーから日本に帰国しました。

ギターの出来上がりまで、通常半年かかります。
途中でジャックから連絡がきて、進捗がわかります。

待っている時間もまた楽しみですね。

通常は、クラシックギターの演奏が主なAkiさんが、今回のCDでは
ジャック・スピラのアコースティックギターを使用しました。
まだAkiさんのギターはできないので、使用したモデルはこちら　0000モデル
ドレッドノートに近いサイズで、トップはシトカ・スプルース、
サイドバックはココボロを使用しています。2010年製です、

    placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched
